In a Feb. 6, 2026 gaggle with reporters, President Trump said that if you look at gasoline, it was $1.99 a gallon.

The national average price of regular gasoline was $2.90 the week ending Feb. 9, 2026, according to the Energy Information Administration - about 19 cents (6%) below where it was when Trump took office, but far from $1.99. No state's average was below $2 at the time; Oklahoma's was the lowest at roughly $2.36.

An industry analyst counted only about 40 individual stations nationwide selling below $2 a gallon - not a national price.
