Doug Burgum is the 55th Secretary of the Interior, sworn in on January 31, 2025. He took office as governor of North Dakota in December 2016 and earlier led the software company Great Plains through its sale to Microsoft.
Biography
Doug Burgum was born on August 1, 1956, and grew up in Arthur, North Dakota. He earned a bachelor’s degree in university studies from North Dakota State University in 1978 and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 1980. In 1983 he provided seed capital for the software startup Great Plains, and as chief executive he led it through an initial public offering in 1997 and its acquisition by Microsoft in 2001. He then spent six years at Microsoft as senior vice president of business solutions. He founded the real estate firm Kilbourne Group in 2006 and co-founded the venture capital firm Arthur Ventures in 2008.
Burgum was elected governor of North Dakota in 2016, took office as the state’s 33rd governor on December 15, 2016, and was re-elected in 2020.
He was sworn in as the 55th Secretary of the Interior on Friday, January 31, 2025, and the department says he began his tenure the following Monday, February 3.
