Background

Biography

Doug Jones was born in Fairfield, Alabama, and grew up in Jefferson County. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and a law degree from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law, served as staff counsel to U.S. Senator Howell Heflin on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and returned to Alabama to practice law. From 1997 to 2001 he was U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, where he reopened the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing case, leading to the prosecution of two former Ku Klux Klan members. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2017, he served from 2018 to 2021 and lost his 2020 reelection bid to Republican Tommy Tuberville. On November 24, 2025 he filed to run for Governor of Alabama. In the May 19, 2026 Democratic primary he defeated Will Boyd, Yolanda Rochelle Flowers, Jamel J. Brown and Chad Martin, with 76 percent of the partial count when the Associated Press called the race. He is the Democratic candidate on November 3, 2026.
