Background

Biography

Eric Schmitt grew up in Bridgeton, Missouri, in St. Louis County. He attended De Smet Jesuit High School, graduated from Truman State University and received a law degree from Saint Louis University, where he was an editor of the law review. He later taught a civics course at Saint Louis University.

He was elected twice to represent the 15th District in the Missouri Senate and then served as Missouri's 46th state treasurer from 2017 to 2019. He resigned as treasurer on January 3, 2019, after Governor Parson appointed him attorney general to complete the term of his predecessor, who had been elected to the U.S. Senate. He served as attorney general until January 3, 2023, when he resigned after his own election to the U.S. Senate.

Schmitt was sworn in as a senator on January 3, 2023. He is vice chairman of the Joint Economic Committee.
