Background

Biography

Josh Green was born on February 11, 1970, in Pennsylvania and was raised in Pittsburgh. He received a degree in biology and anthropology from Swarthmore College and an M.D. from Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University, then completed a residency in family practice. The National Governors Association also lists the University of Pittsburgh among his schools. A National Health Service Corps scholarship took him to practice medicine in the underserved area of Kaʻū on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Green served in the Hawaii State House of Representatives from 2004 to 2008 and in the Hawaii State Senate from 2008 to 2018, including as majority floor leader. The Hawaii State Legislature's 2018 Senate roster lists him as the senator for District 3, Kona and Kaʻu. In 2018 he was elected lieutenant governor of Hawaii.

His term as governor began on December 5, 2022, and the National Governors Association describes him as the state's ninth governor and says he practiced emergency room medicine in rural areas of the Big Island throughout his legislative career.
