Lee Zeldin
Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency
Lee Zeldin is the 17th Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, sworn in on January 29, 2025. A Republican, he represented New York’s 1st Congressional District in the House from 2015 to 2023 and served in the New York State Senate before that.
Biography
Lee Zeldin was born in East Meadow, Nassau County, New York, on January 30, 1980. He earned a B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany in 2001 and a J.D. from Albany Law School in 2003; the EPA says he became the youngest attorney in New York State at 23. He served in the United States Army from 2003 to 2007 and then in the Army Reserve, deploying to Iraq in 2006 with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. The EPA says he served 22 years in the military and retired as a lieutenant colonel in May 2025.
Zeldin was a member of the New York State Senate from 2011 to 2014. Elected as a Republican to the House, he represented New York’s 1st Congressional District from January 3, 2015, to January 3, 2023 and served on the House Foreign Affairs and Financial Services committees. He did not run for reelection in 2022 and ran unsuccessfully for governor of New York.
He was sworn in as the 17th Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency on January 29, 2025.
