Marco Rubio is the 72nd Secretary of State, sworn in on January 21, 2025. He previously represented Florida in the Senate from 2011 to 2025 and was Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives.
Background
Biography
Marco Rubio was born in Miami, Florida, on May 28, 1971. He graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. in 1993 and from the University of Miami with a J.D. in 1996, and worked as a lawyer.
Rubio sat on the West Miami City Commission from 1998 to 2000 and was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008, as majority leader from 2003 to 2006 and as speaker from 2006 to 2008. Elected to the Senate as a Republican in 2010, he served from January 3, 2011, until January 20, 2025, when he resigned to become Secretary of State. He chaired the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship in the 116th Congress; his State Department biography also lists him as a senior member of the Foreign Relations Committee and vice chair of the Select Committee on Intelligence.
President Trump nominated Rubio as Secretary of State in November 2024; the Senate confirmed him 99 to 0. He was sworn in as the 72nd Secretary of State on January 21, 2025.
