Background

Biography

Markwayne Mullin was born in 1977 and grew up on his family's ranch in Westville, Oklahoma. He graduated from Stilwell High School and attended Missouri Valley College on a wrestling scholarship. His Department of Homeland Security biography says he left his studies at age 20 to take over the family business, Mullin Plumbing, and describes him as a business owner and cow-calf rancher. The same biography says he is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and a former professional mixed martial arts fighter.

Mullin, a Republican, represented Oklahoma's 2nd District in the House from the 113th through the 117th Congress, 2013 to 2023. He then served as a senator for Oklahoma in the 118th and 119th Congresses, from 2023 to 2026.

Mullin was sworn in as Secretary of Homeland Security on March 24, 2026. The department lists him as its 9th secretary.
