Background

Biography

Mike Lee was born in 1971. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in political science and from BYU's law school in 1997. He clerked for Judge Dee Benson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah and for Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Lee worked as an attorney at the law firm Sidley & Austin and then as an assistant U.S. attorney in Salt Lake City. He served as general counsel to Utah Governor Jon Huntsman and later clerked for a year for Alito at the Supreme Court. His Senate biography says he returned to private practice in 2007.

He was elected to the Senate in 2010 and took his seat on January 3, 2011. He is chairman of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and serves on the Foreign Relations, Budget and Judiciary committees.
