Background

Biography

Rob Sand was born and raised in Decorah, Iowa, and graduated from Decorah High School in 2001. He graduated from Brown University and attended the University of Iowa College of Law on a full merit scholarship. He spent seven years in the Iowa Attorney General's office as an assistant attorney general and the state's chief public corruption prosecutor, handling white-collar financial crimes including the Iowa Film Office tax credit cases and a multistate lottery-rigging case, which he later wrote about in the book The Winning Ticket. He was elected Iowa Auditor of State in 2018, took office on January 2, 2019 as the state's 33rd auditor, and was re-elected in 2022; his current term expires in January 2027. He is the only Democrat holding statewide elected office in Iowa. He is running for Governor of Iowa in 2026 with Dave Muhlbauer as his running mate. He was unopposed in the June 2, 2026 Democratic primary and faces Republican Zach Lahn on November 3, 2026.
