Troy Jackson grew up in Aroostook County, Maine, and lives in Allagash. He earned an associate degree from the University of Maine at Fort Kent in 2000. A fifth-generation logger, he worked in the woods like his father and took part in a labor protest in which loggers blocked the Canadian border over wages, after which he ran for the Legislature.
