Background

Biography

Ty Masterson lives in Andover, Kansas. He owned a residential construction company and later served as director of GoCreate, a community workspace for entrepreneurs at Wichita State University. He served on the Andover City Council in 2005 and was elected that year to the Kansas House of Representatives from the 99th District, serving from 2005 to 2009. He was elected to the Kansas Senate from the 16th District in Butler County in 2008 and has served since 2009; he is the President of the Senate and vice chair of the Legislative Coordinating Council. The 2026 race for Governor of Kansas is open because Governor Laura Kelly is term-limited. In the seven-candidate Republican primary on August 4, 2026, Masterson received 43.2 percent to 22.4 percent for businessman Philip Sarnecki, 13.7 percent for Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt and about 11 percent for Secretary of State Scott Schwab. He faces Democrat Cindy Holscher, a state senator from Overland Park, on November 3, 2026.
