Bernie Sanders is a U.S. Senator from Vermont, an independent who has served in the Senate since January 3, 2007. He was previously mayor of Burlington from 1981 to 1989 and Vermont's at-large member of the U.S. House from 1991 to 2007.
Background
Biography
Sanders was born in 1941 in Brooklyn. He attended James Madison High School, Brooklyn College and the University of Chicago, where he received a B.A. in 1964, and moved to Vermont after graduating. His Senate biography says he lectured at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and at Hamilton College in New York.
In 1981 he was elected to the first of four terms as mayor of Burlington, serving until 1989. He was elected in 1990 as Vermont's at-large member of the U.S. House of Representatives and served there from 1991 to 2007.
Sanders has been a senator from Vermont since January 3, 2007, and the Senate lists him as an independent. His office says he won re-election in 2024 and is serving his fourth term. He previously chaired the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs and the Senate Budget Committee, and he is the ranking member of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
