Background

Biography

Chuck Schumer was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from James Madison High School. He attended Harvard University and Harvard Law School, graduating from the law school in 1974.

After law school Schumer was elected to the New York State Assembly. In 1980 he was elected to the U.S. House, where his official biography says he represented a district in Brooklyn and Queens for eighteen years. He was elected to the Senate in 1998 and, according to the same biography, re-elected in 2004, 2016 and 2022. After the 2004 election he joined the Senate Finance Committee and chaired the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and after the 2006 elections he was appointed vice chair of the Democratic Conference.

Senate Democrats elected him their leader in 2016, and he became Senate Majority Leader in 2021. The Senate lists him as Democratic Leader and chair of the conference for the 119th Congress.
