Background

Biography

Edward J. Markey was born in Malden, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1946. He graduated from Malden Catholic High School in 1964 and earned a B.A. from Boston College in 1968 and a J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1972. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1968 to 1973 and worked as a lawyer in private practice.

Markey was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1973 to 1976. He was elected to the U.S. House as a Democrat in a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Representative Torbert H. Macdonald, and was reelected to the nineteen succeeding Congresses, serving from November 2, 1976, to July 15, 2013.

He resigned from the House after winning the June 25, 2013, special election for the Senate seat vacated by John F. Kerry, and took the oath of office on July 16, 2013. He was reelected in 2014 and 2020. He is the ranking member of the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
