Background

Biography

Greg Gianforte was born on April 17, 1961, in San Diego, California. He graduated from Upper Merion High School in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, in 1979 and earned a B.S. and an M.S. from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1983. The House historian's office lists him as an engineer and business owner. His National Governors Association biography says he founded RightNow Technologies in Bozeman in 1997 and spent 34 years in the private sector.

Gianforte was an unsuccessful candidate for governor of Montana in 2016. He was elected as a Republican to the House in a special election to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Representative Ryan Zinke, was reelected once, and served from May 25, 2017, to January 3, 2021. He did not seek reelection to the House in 2020 and was instead elected governor.

He was elected Montana's 25th governor in November 2020 and reelected in November 2024. His first term began on January 4, 2021, and his second on January 6, 2025.
