Background

Biography

Rashida Tlaib was born in Detroit, Michigan, on July 24, 1976. She graduated from Southwestern High School in 1994, earned a B.A. from Wayne State University in 1998 and a J.D. from Western Michigan University in 2004, and worked as a lawyer. She was on staff at the Michigan state house of representatives from 2007 to 2008 and a member of that chamber from 2009 to 2014.

Tlaib was elected as a Democrat to the 116th and the three succeeding Congresses; her House service began on January 3, 2019. According to the House historian, she was censured by the House on November 7, 2023, for "promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for the destruction of the state of Israel." She represents Michigan's 12th Congressional District and serves on the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
