Background

Biography

Thom Tillis was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on August 30, 1960. His Senate biography says he was unable to afford college after high school and took a job as a warehouse records clerk, and that he earned his degree at 36; the Congressional Directory records a B.S. from the University of Maryland University College in 1997.

He was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers from 1990 to 2002 and a partner at IBM Global Business Services from 2002 to 2009, part of what his biography calls a 29-year private-sector career in technology and management consulting.

Tillis served on the Town of Cornelius Board of Commissioners. In 2006 he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives, and he was speaker of the House from 2011 to 2014. He was elected to the U.S. Senate on November 4, 2014, and Senate records list his service as beginning January 3, 2015; he was re-elected on November 3, 2020. He serves on the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Finance, Judiciary and Veterans' Affairs committees and on the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe.
