Abigail Spanberger is the governor of Virginia, in office since January 17, 2026. A former CIA case officer, she represented Virginia in the U.S. House from January 3, 2019, to January 3, 2025.

Background

Biography

Abigail Spanberger was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, on August 7, 1979, and grew up just outside Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from J.R. Tucker High School in Henrico, earned a B.A. from the University of Virginia in 2001 and an M.B.A. from Purdue University in 2002. Her official biography says the M.B.A. came from a dual-degree program between Purdue and the GISMA business school in Germany.

The House historian's office lists her as a teacher, a postal inspector with the United States Postal Service, a case officer at the Central Intelligence Agency from 2006 to 2014, and a consultant. She was elected as a Democrat to the 116th Congress and the two that followed, serving from January 3, 2019, to January 3, 2025, and represented Virginia's Seventh Congressional District. She was not a candidate for reelection in 2024.

The National Governors Association lists her term as governor as beginning on January 17, 2026.
