Biography

Mark R. Warner was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He completed his degree at George Washington University in 1977 and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1980. His Senate biography says he co-founded the company that became the wireless carrier Nextel and spent more than 20 years as a technology entrepreneur and investor. The National Governors Association lists him as a founding partner of Columbia Capital Corporation.

He ran for governor of Virginia in 2001, was inaugurated in January 2002 and left office in 2006. The National Governors Association says he is a past chair of that association and also chaired the Southern Governors' Association and the Education Commission of the States.
