Background

Biography

Tim Kaine was born on February 26, 1958, in Minnesota and grew up in Kansas City. He attended the University of Missouri and Harvard Law School. His Senate biography says that after graduating from Missouri he ran a technical school founded by Jesuit missionaries in Honduras. He practiced law in Richmond for 17 years, representing people denied housing because of their race or disability, and began teaching law part-time at the University of Richmond in 1987.

Kaine was first elected to office in 1994 as a Richmond city council member and four years later became mayor of Richmond. He was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia in 2001 and became the 70th governor on January 14, 2006; the National Governors Association lists his term as ending January 15, 2010. He chaired the Democratic National Committee from 2009 through 2011.

He was elected to the Senate in 2012 and sworn in on January 3, 2013. He serves on the Armed Services; Foreign Relations; Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; and Budget committees.
