Background

Biography

James Lankford was born in Dallas, Texas, on March 4, 1968. He earned a B.S. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990 and an M.Div. from a Baptist seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1994. The House historian's office lists him as a youth camp director from 1996 to 2009.

Lankford was elected to the House as a Republican and served from January 3, 2011, to January 3, 2015. He did not seek reelection to the House and instead won the November 4, 2014, special election for the unexpired Senate term left vacant by the resignation of Thomas Coburn. He took the oath of office on January 3, 2015, and was reelected in 2016 and 2022.

He has been vice chair of the Senate Republican Conference since 2025 and chairs the Select Committee on Ethics, a post he also held in 2020. He also sits on the Finance, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and Intelligence committees.
