Background

Biography

Joe Wilson was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 31, 1947. He earned a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University in 1969 and a law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1972. He served in the Army Reserve from 1972 to 1975 and the South Carolina Army National Guard from 1975 to 2003. He was a lawyer, deputy general counsel at the U.S. Department of Energy from 1981 to 1982, and worked for Senator Strom Thurmond and Representative Floyd Spence.

Wilson served in the South Carolina state senate from 1984 to 2001. He won a special election as a Republican to fill the vacancy caused by Spence's death and has served since December 18, 2001. The House reprimanded him on September 15, 2009, for interrupting the President's remarks before a joint session. He sits on the Armed Services, Education and Workforce, and Foreign Affairs committees.
