Biography
Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins was born and raised in Sitka, Alaska, where his mother worked as a family doctor at the local hospital. He graduated from Sitka High School and attended college on the East Coast but left without a degree to run for the Alaska House of Representatives, winning his first campaign by 32 votes. A Democrat, he represented Sitka and rural Southeast Alaska in the House from 2013 to 2023 and served on a bipartisan, bicameral fiscal working group that drafted a long-term budget plan in 2021. He did not seek reelection in 2022. On February 4, 2026 he announced his candidacy for governor in Sitka, the sixteenth candidate to enter. In the August 18, 2026 open primary he finished first among 17 candidates with 28,406 votes, or 21.6 percent, in preliminary results. The other Democrat in the top four, Tom Begich, withdrew by the August 31 deadline. Kreiss-Tomkins appears on the November 3, 2026 ranked-choice ballot with Republicans Bernadette Wilson, Dave Bronson and Treg Taylor.
