Background

Biography

Lynne Walz grew up on a small hog farm outside Fremont, Nebraska. After high school she worked for a nonprofit serving people with developmental disabilities, then returned to school at Midland Lutheran College and earned a degree in education. She taught fourth and fifth grade at Fremont Public Schools and at Archbishop Bergan Catholic School and served on Bergan's school board. She was elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 2016, defeating an incumbent Republican, and was reelected in 2020. Her colleagues elected her chair of the Education Committee. She lives in Fremont with her husband, Chris Walz. In the May 2026 Democratic primary for governor she won 91.5 percent of the vote over Larry Marvin, according to the NBC News Decision Desk. Her running mate for lieutenant governor is Ben Steffen. The Nebraska Secretary of State's results page lists the Walz and Steffen ticket as the Democratic candidates in the November 3, 2026 general election against Republican Governor Jim Pillen and Joe Kelly.
