Background

Biography

Scott Colom was born and raised in Columbus, Mississippi, where he still lives, and describes himself as a seventh-generation Mississippian. He graduated from Millsaps College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before becoming district attorney he served as an interim Lowndes County justice court judge and as city prosecutor for Columbus. In 2015 he was elected district attorney for the 16th Circuit Court District, defeating Forrest Allgood, a 27-year incumbent, and he was reelected in 2019 and 2023. President Joe Biden nominated him on October 14, 2022 to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi; the nomination stalled in 2023 after Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith declined to return a blue slip. Colom announced on September 3, 2025 that he would run for U.S. Senate against Hyde-Smith. He won the March 10, 2026 Democratic primary over Albert Littell and Priscilla W. Till and faces Hyde-Smith and independent Ty Pinkins in the November 3, 2026 general election.
