Mario Diaz-Balart is a Republican who represents Florida's 26th Congressional District in the U.S. House, where he has served since January 3, 2003. He previously served in the Florida state house of representatives and the Florida state senate.

Background

Biography

Mario Diaz-Balart was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on September 25, 1961. He graduated from Miami Shores Preparatory High School in 1979 and attended the University of South Florida in Tampa. He worked as a marketing executive.

Diaz-Balart was a member of the Florida state house of representatives from 1988 to 1992 and again from 2000 to 2002, and a member of the Florida state senate from 1992 to 2000. He was elected as a Republican to the 108th Congress and to the eleven succeeding Congresses, serving since January 3, 2003. He serves on the Committee on Appropriations; his House biography says he is the committee's vice chair.
